The PADI Underwater Navigator course replaces that guesswork with a genuine skill set: how to read the underwater environment, use a compass with precision, estimate distances, and always find your way back, whether you’re returning to the boat, relocating a dive site, or navigating an unfamiliar reef entirely underwater.
It’s one of the most practical specialties in diving. Better navigation means longer dives, less air wasted on inefficient routes, no unnecessary surface swims, and the kind of confidence that comes from always knowing exactly where you are.
How the Course Works
eLearning, Before Your Dive Days
You complete the theory online at your own pace before arriving for in-water training. The eLearning covers the principles of underwater navigation, how currents and visibility affect orientation, natural navigation techniques, compass use and reading, and planning efficient dive routes. You arrive ready to apply what you’ve learned, not to hear it for the first time.
Surface Practice, Before the First Dive
Before entering the water, you practice using a compass on the surface with your instructor. Patterns, turns, bearings- you work through the fundamentals in a straightforward setting before the added variable of being underwater. This is what makes the difference between understanding the theory and being able to apply it.
Three Open Water Dives In the Red Sea
All three qualifying dives take place in open water in the Red Sea. Across these dives, you practice:
- Estimating distance underwater using kick cycles and time
- Compass navigation, including multi-turn patterns with at least five turns
- Using natural cues, terrain, coral formations, light, and current direction to orient yourself without instruments
- Marking and relocating a submerged object or position from the surface
- Underwater map making, recording your dive site in a way you can use again
By the third dive, navigating back to the boat or shore entry point accurately and entirely underwater is no longer a skill you’re working on; it’s something you can do.

Who This Course Is For
Any certified diver, Open Water and above, who wants to navigate more accurately and dive more efficiently. If you’ve ever surfaced earlier than planned because you weren’t sure where the boat was, or missed a site because you couldn’t find it from your entry point, this course directly addresses that.
This specialty also counts as one of the five required specialties toward your PADI Master Scuba Diver certification, the highest recreational diving rating PADI offers.

What is underwater navigation?
Underwater navigation is the skill of finding your way while diving, using a combination of compass bearings, natural cues (terrain, coral formations, light, current direction), distance estimation, and pattern planning. The goal is to move efficiently between points underwater, return accurately to your exit point, and relocate sites or objects without having to surface and reorient.
What natural navigation cues do divers use?
Natural navigation uses features of the underwater environment to maintain orientation: the slope and direction of the reef, the position of the sun relative to depth and time of day, current direction, sand ripple patterns, depth changes, and coral formations. The Underwater Navigator course teaches you to read all of these systematically rather than relying on a single cue.
Do I need my own compass?
A dive compass is the primary instrument used in this course. We include one as part of your full equipment package; you don’t need to bring your own. If you do own a compass, bring it, and your instructor can work with your specific gear.
How does this course count toward Master Scuba Diver?
The PADI Master Scuba Diver rating requires completing five PADI Specialty courses along with the Rescue Diver certification. The Underwater Navigator Specialty counts as one of those five. If you’ve already completed the navigation Adventure Dive in your Advanced Open Water course, ask your instructor if that dive may count toward this certification.
What is underwater map-making?
One of the three dives in this course involves creating an underwater map of your dive site, recording features, distances, bearings, and depth changes in a way that allows you and other divers to navigate the site accurately on future dives. It’s a practical exercise in applied navigation that reinforces every skill taught in the course.
What are the medical requirements?
Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Certain medical conditions, medications, or recent surgery may require written physician approval before diving.
